Connecticut becomes first state to require labeling of GMO's

Connecticut has become a pioneer in food labeling as it is the first state to pass legislation to make companies say if their products contain genetically modified organisms or GMOs.

GMOs are used to help plants be resistant to herbicides and pesticides, but it's done by taking DNA from a bacteria or a virus, which is inserted into the seed. GMOs are commonly found in  corn, soy, canola and sugar.

Gov. Dannel Malloy held a ceremonial bill signing in Fairfield on Wednesday to commemorate a bill that requires certain foods intended for humans to be clearly marked that it is entirely or partially genetically engineered.

"People need to demand GMO labeling," Malloy said. "Some companies are doing this and we need to move in that direction."

According to the statement, Connecticut's law goes into effect after four other states enacted similar legislation.

"I am proud that leaders from each of the legislative caucuses can come together to make our state the first in the nation to require the labeling of (Genetically Modified Organisms)," Malloy said in a statement. "The end result is a law that shows our commitment to consumers' right to know while catalyzing other states to take similar action."

In addition, a combination of northeastern states with a combined population of at least 20 million, including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, must adopt similar laws.

Officials said the bill also includes language that will protect local farmers to ensure regional adoption of the new labeling system before it will require local farms to analyze and label genetically engineered products.

Buying foods that are organic has become popular and in health food stores, it's not common to find products that are already labeled GMO-free.

Lisa Storch, who owns the Catch A Healthy Habit in Fairfield, said more and more people want to know what's in the foods they eat.

"It's little steps at a time," Storch said. "(We are) trying different avenues as far as healthy eating and what works for you."

You must always remember, understand and be fully conscious / aware of your civic, legal, moral, constitutional and patriotic loyalties and responsibilities, as the defender and the protector of the people, employed by the people, to serve, preserve, protect and safeguard your fellow Americans, to be loyal and dignified human being. And if at any time, for any reason, your orders were contrary to your numerated obligations and oath of office, you must immediately arrest and detain the criminal traitors who issued those orders and keep them in custody until trial, regardless of their office, rank and position.

You must always be fully informed and alert to resist any and all false flag operations’ temptations, harmful and dehumanizing anti public propaganda and directives handed down by the criminal authorities of the current U.S. regime. Must be fully conscious of the fact that all levels of U.S. government’s employees, workers, authorities, officials, appointed, and or elected politicians are all servants of the American people. Those who order you to turn your weapons on the nation are in fact traitors and must be arrested immediately and detained for trial, regardless of their office, rank and position. So many of you: U.S. Armed Forces, America's sons and daughters, have been dispatched to foreign lands, under false pretenses and sacrificed to provide plundering opportunities for the fascists nation-less corporations; do not go to war for any reason, your family, your home, your community and your country is here, you are needed here, at home, in the United States.

You must always remember and beware of the simple fact that: WE, THE PEOPLE, include “you” as well. We are all in this together. And should the American people rise-up to dismiss, expel, remove, discharge, lay-off and fire any of the current corrupt dominant figures, authorities and officials in order to create an environment conducive for establishing legitimate and honest election reform and system, thus be able to set fourth new ideas and means of achieving true democracy, freedom, security, liberty, happiness, social justice, economic prosperity and political advancements for all, to form a government of the people, by the people, for the people, which obviously applies to the entire nation, including all of “you”, “your loved ones and your family” as well.

Should such nonviolent peaceful uprising occur, you must beware and highly alert, your mission is, and will always be, to serve and safeguard your fellow Americans, not the corrupt ruling elites, by forming a tall strong people protecting barrier to defend and protect the people against the corrupt officials and their goons, preventing them from inflecting any form of false-flag operations to derail and destroy the peoples’ uprising objectives. You must stand tall, alert and strong in defense and support of the nation, allowing the American people to establish a new equitable democracy and until such time that all of the desired goals have been realized.

We, the people must always remember that police force is kept ignorant of the truth deliberately.  We must inform our police officers, remind the police that prostituted politicians are hiding behind the police.  We, the people should never attack and fight the police.  We must talk to them and invite them to join we, the people, in a nonviolent peaceful protest, together demanding the truth be told and appropriate actions be taken to right the wrongs.

Take your mandatory flu vaccine shot and shove it!

Last week the city Board of Health voted to force annual flu vaccinations on all babies and children under age 5 who attend day-care centers and preschool programs. Here, Sophia Ling, mother of 3-year-old Oona and a fitness instructor in Staten Island, tells The Post’s Mary Kay Linge how the risks of the shot outweigh the benefits — and wants nannying bureaucrats to stop trampling parents’ rights.

When I first heard about the new flu vaccine rule, I was upset but not surprised. The Board of Health did this so quietly, with no input from parents of young children. The unanimous vote was cast before New Yorkers had any chance to protest.

I don’t respond well to being bullied on a matter of personal health. I also dislike the underhanded way this is being forced only on our youngest citizens. Parents of toddlers aren’t an organized political faction — we’re a bit too busy keeping our kids safe and calculating the distance to the nearest potty.

To get more facts about the flu vaccine, I turned to the Staten Island Natural & Attachment Parenting group on Facebook. Moms banding together are a powerful force. I followed links to documents from the Centers for Disease Control, vaccine manufacturers and research studies. The more I learned, the more livid I became.

In any given year, the CDC admits, the flu vaccine may be totally ineffective against the flu. That’s because scientists have to guess which strains of the flu virus will be going around each year. Some years, they guess wrong.

At best, the flu vaccine may be 60 percent effective. To me, a 0 to 60 percent efficacy rate equals one thing: fail.

Plenty of people who get the flu shot come down with flu anyway. It happened to me, actually — the only time I got a flu shot, during my pregnancy, I was sick for a week.

Not only that, the CDC says, “the flu vaccine works best among healthy adults and older children,” less well for babies and toddlers — the very people being targeted by the city’s new rule. Safety testing on children, especially babies and toddlers, has been limited.

And the side effects of the flu vaccine are very real. The manufacturers’ warning labels give a long list of potential risks — everything from fever and headache to convulsions, blood disorders and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Last flu season, at least five young children died as a direct result of the flu vaccine, according to the federal database that tracked adverse reactions during the 2012-13 flu season.

So, am I willing to roll the dice and hope that Oona is one of the lucky ones? No. In my judgment, the potential risks to my daughter outweigh the possible benefits.

I’m not against vaccination per se. Oona is getting all the vaccinations required by New York state. But those shots have much higher efficacy rates, confer long-term or lifetime immunity and protect against far more dangerous illnesses than the flu.

So now I may have to change my plans for my daughter and me. Rather than send Oona to preschool in the fall, I may choose to home-school her until she turns 6.

How sad it would be if our new mayor’s signature issue — early childhood education — is undone because parents refuse to be bullied by a government bent on taking away our most basic rights.
