How We Learned Not to Guzzle

- By RALPH CAVANAGH - September 12, 2013 - The New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO - FOR as long as most of us can remember, the nation’s energy news has trended from bad to worse, starting with the oil crises of the 1970s. But today, the good news is that our energy productivity and security are better than they have been in decades.

You would never know it by listening to those who say our energy security requires construction of the massive Keystone XL pipeline, or a new surge of oil and gas drilling, or a nuclear power renaissance, or all of the above. And while “all of the above” has emerged as the favored national energy policy of both parties, fortunately that is not the focus of President Obama’s promising climate action plan.

He has given top priority instead to our most productive and lowest-cost option: the “energy efficiency resources” that come from getting more out of oil, natural gas and electricity with increasingly efficient equipment and vehicles, used more carefully.

Government data indicate that our energy-saving efforts already have yielded some amazingly good news. Our factories and businesses are producing substantially more products and value with less energy, which goes to the heart of the president’s climate strategy. In fact, energy use in the United States has been dropping since 2007, and last year’s total was below the 1999 level, even though the economy grew by more than 25 percent from 1999 to 2012, adjusted for inflation.

At the same time, the amount of oil we are using in our vehicles, homes and businesses continued to decline last year, down 14 percent from a peak in 2005. Surprisingly, oil use was lower in 2012 than in 1973 (when the nation’s economy was only about a third of its current size). The main reason is that we are demanding better mileage from our vehicles and driving them less.

These remarkable trends began decades ago. Without trying too hard, over the past 40 years we found so many innovative ways to save energy that we more than doubled the economic productivity of our oil, natural gas and electricity.

Moreover, efficiency’s contribution to meeting the nation’s overall energy needs over that period exceeded that of all fossil and nuclear resources combined, according to a recent study by the Bipartisan Policy Center, a result of 18 months of work by a panel that included me as well as prominent industry representatives.

Total energy use per dollar of goods produced is down, as are gasoline use per mile driven, cost of energy services (from lighting to refrigeration) and greenhouse gases emitted. These reductions are saving hundreds of billions of dollars every year. They are helping American workers and companies compete worldwide. And they are making our country more secure.

With numerous studies uncovering vast untapped energy efficiency savings, there are several critical steps we should now take. First, the federal and state governments must keep tightening efficiency standards for buildings, equipment and vehicles. This also means ensuring that the administration follows through with its recent commitment to end what my organization and a number of states contend are unlawful delays in releasing standards already approved by the Department of Energy. Second, the Environmental Protection Agency must reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new and existing power plants by adopting standards that recognize the contribution energy efficiency can make to reducing such pollution.

In addition, state regulators should reward utilities for helping residential, business and industrial customers use energy more efficiently, and stop the widespread practice of penalizing utilities when their sales level off or decline because customers are using less energy. When regulators set rates, they establish targets for utilities’ allowable revenues, and this unintentionally links the companies’ financial health to robust sales of electricity and natural gas. The problem can be solved if regulators allow modest annual rate adjustments that correct for any unexpected changes in utility sales.

Half the states have instituted such “decoupling” systems for at least some of their investor-owned natural gas and electric utilities, but the process is taking too long and only one publicly owned utility, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, has adopted these reforms. The rest should step up.

When it comes to our personal and government energy budgets, we must focus on achieving still more energy savings that cost (and pollute) far less than the electricity, natural gas and oil we won’t need as a result. There are so many steps we can take, ranging from upgrading our light bulbs and insulation to retrofitting our homes and buildings with new energy-saving products and appliances. Most utilities have become good sources of information and financial incentives for interested customers.

For 40 years now, energy efficiency has been America’s most productive energy resource. In a nation and world with funding constraints, an “all of the above” energy policy that threatens the environment is a guarantee of costly disappointment. As the president knows, it is far better to give priority to efficiency improvements that cost less than the energy they displace.

A Plea for Caution From Russia

- By VLADIMIR V. PUTIN - September 11, 2013 - The New York Times

MOSCOW - RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies.

Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.

The United Nations’ founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and with America’s consent the veto by Security Council permanent members was enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The profound wisdom of this has underpinned the stability of international relations for decades.

No one wants the United Nations to suffer the fate of the League of Nations, which collapsed because it lacked real leverage. This is possible if influential countries bypass the United Nations and take military action without Security Council authorization.

The potential strike by the United States against Syria, despite strong opposition from many countries and major political and religious leaders, including the pope, will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria’s borders. A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa. It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance.

Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multireligious country. There are few champions of democracy in Syria. But there are more than enough Qaeda fighters and extremists of all stripes battling the government. The United States State Department has designated Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, fighting with the opposition, as terrorist organizations. This internal conflict, fueled by foreign weapons supplied to the opposition, is one of the bloodiest in the world.

Mercenaries from Arab countries fighting there, and hundreds of militants from Western countries and even Russia, are an issue of our deep concern. Might they not return to our countries with experience acquired in Syria? After all, after fighting in Libya, extremists moved on to Mali. This threatens us all.

From the outset, Russia has advocated peaceful dialogue enabling Syrians to develop a compromise plan for their own future. We are not protecting the Syrian government, but international law. We need to use the United Nations Security Council and believe that preserving law and order in today’s complex and turbulent world is one of the few ways to keep international relations from sliding into chaos. The law is still the law, and we must follow it whether we like it or not. Under current international law, force is permitted only in self-defense or by the decision of the Security Council. Anything else is unacceptable under the United Nations Charter and would constitute an act of aggression.

No one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria. But there is every reason to believe it was used not by the Syrian Army, but by opposition forces, to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons, who would be siding with the fundamentalists. Reports that militants are preparing another attack — this time against Israel — cannot be ignored.

It is alarming that military intervention in internal conflicts in foreign countries has become commonplace for the United States. Is it in America’s long-term interest? I doubt it. Millions around the world increasingly see America not as a model of democracy but as relying solely on brute force, cobbling coalitions together under the slogan “you’re either with us or against us.”

But force has proved ineffective and pointless. Afghanistan is reeling, and no one can say what will happen after international forces withdraw. Libya is divided into tribes and clans. In Iraq the civil war continues, with dozens killed each day. In the United States, many draw an analogy between Iraq and Syria, and ask why their government would want to repeat recent mistakes.

No matter how targeted the strikes or how sophisticated the weapons, civilian casualties are inevitable, including the elderly and children, whom the strikes are meant to protect.

The world reacts by asking: if you cannot count on international law, then you must find other ways to ensure your security. Thus a growing number of countries seek to acquire weapons of mass destruction. This is logical: if you have the bomb, no one will touch you. We are left with talk of the need to strengthen nonproliferation, when in reality this is being eroded.

We must stop using the language of force and return to the path of civilized diplomatic and political settlement.

A new opportunity to avoid military action has emerged in the past few days. The United States, Russia and all members of the international community must take advantage of the Syrian government’s willingness to place its chemical arsenal under international control for subsequent destruction. Judging by the statements of President Obama, the United States sees this as an alternative to military action.

I welcome the president’s interest in continuing the dialogue with Russia on Syria. We must work together to keep this hope alive, as we agreed to at the Group of 8 meeting in Lough Erne in Northern Ireland in June, and steer the discussion back toward negotiations.

If we can avoid force against Syria, this will improve the atmosphere in international affairs and strengthen mutual trust. It will be our shared success and open the door to cooperation on other critical issues.

My working and personal relationship with President Obama is marked by growing trust. I appreciate this. I carefully studied his address to the nation on Tuesday. And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States’ policy is “what makes America different. It’s what makes us exceptional.” It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

Vladimir V. Putin is the president of Russia.

Water is 2 atom of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen (H2O), bonding together forming one molecule of water. Hydrogen Peroxide is (H2O2), water plus one extra atom of oxygen. When Hydrogen Peroxide come in contact with germs and bacteria, that extra atom of oxygen bonds with germs and bacteria, thus oxidizing them on contact, destroying them without any harm, or side effects.

Hydrogen Peroxide is safe, it is readily available, it is cheap, and best of all it really works! It works and does lots of amazing things safely and organically!

Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) Many Benefits

- By Dr. Becky Ransey

I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store.

My husband and I have been working in the medical field for over 36 years, and most doctors don't tell you about peroxide, or they would lose thousands of dollars.

1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe or shower.) No more canker sores and your teeth will be whiter without expensive plastic tapes and pastes.

2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs. Hydrogen Peroxide H2O2, is an amazing and effective mouthwash as well.

3. Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters.

4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

5. I had fungus on my feet for years - until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine, but was healed by soaking in peroxide.

7. Ladies, Douche regularly and organically with (H2O2) Hydrogen Peroxide 3%. You will have a clean fresh smelling healthy vagina and uterus. H2O2 cleans and disinfects very effectively, removing yeast, or any other infection. At first you will experience some tingling feelings and foamy discharge, while H2O2 is flushing out the bacteria buildup out of your vagina and uterus. But do not worry, that is perfectly fine, the cleaner your vagina and uterus become there will be small amount of discharge, or none at all.

Put two cupful of (H2O2) Hydrogen Peroxide 3% into a douche to organically disinfect without any side effects and prevent yeast, or any other infection diseases. I had chronic yeast infections until I started douching at least twice a week. Never had any problem ever since.

8. Put a capful of (H2O2) Hydrogen Peroxide 3% into an ear syringe to organically disinfect, remove wax, debris, clean and unclog your ear and your children's ear without any side effects.

9. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.

10. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes then blow your nose into a handkerchief.

11. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.

12. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so it's not a drastic change.

13. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections.

14. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary. I could go on and on. It is a little brown bottle no home should be without! With prices of most necessities rising, I'm glad there's away to save tons of money in such a simple, healthy manner!

15. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors with, there is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this.

Hydrogen Peroxide is safe, it is readily available, it is cheap, and best of all it really works. It works and does lots of amazing things safely and organicallyHydrogen Peroxide is described as an effective anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal, and can be used for anthrax decontamination. More facts that support the effectiveness of Hydrogen Peroxide, don't you think?

Also: your body makes hydrogen peroxide to fight infection, which must be present for our immune system to function correctly. White blood cells are known as Leukocytes. A sub-class of Leukocytes called Neutrophils produce hydrogen peroxide as the first line of defense against toxins, parasites, bacteria, viruses and yeast.

Simply put, it is the oxygenation of the body. Sickness and tumors are generally oxygen-hating growths, which thrive in oxygen-poor bodies.

16. Gargle with hydrogen peroxide, put drops in the ear and nose to end colds, flu, chronic sinusitis (including polyps), and infections.

17. Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals.

18. Disinfect your dishwasher or refrigerator.

19. Use it on trees and plants as a natural fungicide, insecticide, and as a weed killer.

20. Clean with hydrogen peroxide when your house becomes a biohazard after its invaded by toxic mold, such as those with water damage.

Throughout the world hydrogen peroxide is used instead of chlorine as a safer and eco-friendly municipal water purifier. Some use H2O2 in pools and spas.

Dr. Edward C. Rosenow, author of 450 published medical papers and associate at the Mayo Clinic for over 60 years, proved - more than - 70 years ago (1914) that bacteria could be found consistently in the lymph nodes that drain joints (J.A.M.A., April 11, 1914).

He was probably the first scientist to postulate that H2O2 would help arthritis because of its ability to supply oxygen to oxygen-hating organisms causing arthritis (Streptococcus viridans)."

Hydrogen Peroxide 3% for Eradicating Ear Infections, Cold Viruses and Seasonal Flu

- By Dr. Tracy Tranchitella - October 16, 2012

Hydrogen Peroxide 3% for Eradicating Ear Infections, Cold Viruses and Seasonal FluThe use of hydrogen peroxide in medicine has been around for many years. We all know of its antiseptic and anti-infective abilities for quickly disinfecting and healing open wounds. Hydrogen peroxide is also very effective for preventive treatment and infection prevention, which can be delivered by an ear- dropper into the ear, to help resolve “swimmer’s ear” and other inflammation and infections of ear canal.

The following information was obtained from various medical and scientific sources including: (www.mercola.com) and the Townsend Newsletter for Patients and Physicians (www.townsendletter.com). This information is particularly useful with the approaching cold and flu season. The hydrogen peroxide use as home remedy treatments, implemented with just a small amount of hydrogen peroxide applied using an ear dropper. A bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide 3% is available at any drug store for less than a couple of dollars.

In 1928 a Dr. Richard Simmons discovered that cold and flu viruses enter our body through the ear canal. His findings were dismissed by the ignorant medical community at the time. According to Dr. Simmons, contrary to what many believed, or have been taught about how you catch the flu, or the cold, there is only one way that you can catch the two, and that is via the ear canal not through the eyes, or nose, or mouth as most had thought.

While a common cold, including chest cold and head cold, can be caused by more than 200 different cold viruses, seasonal flu is caused by either the influenza A, or B viruses. It has been proven for many years now that the so-called “Flu Vaccine” could not stop, nor prevent any of the cold and flu viruses. Vaccines are the pharmaceutical’s cash cow and are highly hazardous to your health. The strongest and the best defense against these viruses is your own body immune system.

Keeping your fingers out of your ears will greatly reduce your chances of catching flu, or the cold, but then again flu, or cold viruses are microscopic and can be air-born and may land on or even in your ear. Once they have entered the inner-ear (middle-ear) there they begin breeding process, and from there they have access to every avenue throughout our body to travel to and to infect and make us sick.

This concept was hard to believe and even today is largely ignored. In 1938 even German researchers had good success using hydrogen peroxide 3% in treating colds and flu. Just like the work of Dr. Richards Simmons. But due to the influence of the pharmaceutical companies, interested only to sell drugs and prolong any disease treatment as long and as costly as possible to increase their own profits, thereby the German researchers work was ignored and forgotten as well.

Must Start Treatment Early:

The most important fact regarding this treatment is to start early, within 12 to 14 hours of cold and flu symptoms, itching throat, runny nose, body aches, fever, etc. If started early effectiveness seems to be about 80% depending on feeding the patient good nutritious healthy foods, soups, fresh raw garlic, vegetables and fresh fruits and fresh fruits juices.

Here’s how the process works:

* Lie on your side and administer a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) into your exposed ear. You may experience a mild warming and stinging at first, as well as some bubbling. The H2O2 starts working within 2 to 3 minutes eradicating the flu and cold virus.

* After the bubbling (and possibly the mild stinging if it occurs) subsides (usually within 5 to 10 minutes) drain remaining liquid onto a tissue or small towel and repeat the process in your other ear.

* It is best to put down that Q-tip! You should not stick any object smaller than your elbow into the ear, doctors’ say.

* This is a perfectly safe method for infants and children; however, the warm bubbling and mild stinging may frighten some kids. A young child may need some reassurance that this therapy will help their condition.

* Be sure not to get the hydrogen peroxide in your eyes. If you do, simply wash and flush with cold water.

* If you are unsure as to the status of your child’s ear condition (infection) you should see your personal physician. This treatment would be contraindicated if a ruptured eardrum exists.

Hydrogen Peroxide Foot Soak - Another Option:

A hydrogen peroxide foot bath is another option for the treatment of colds and flu. This is a good option, particular for adults who can sit quietly with their feet in a water tub for 15 to 20 minutes.

Here is the peroxide foot soak protocol:

* 6 quarts (4 cups) of warm water

* 8 ounces of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

* ½ teaspoon of Epsom Salt

* 1 Foot tub (big enough to comfortably place your feet without crunching your toes).

* If redness or irritation occurs, the amount of peroxide used can be reduced.

Again, the best time to implement any of the said treatments would be within the first 12 hours of cold and flu symptoms.
